Job Title: School Resource Officer (SRO)
Job Description:
We are seeking a dedicated, experienced, and community-oriented School Resource Officer (SRO) to join our school environment and contribute to the safety and well-being of our students and staff. The ideal candidate will be a retired Kentucky Police Officers Professional Standards (KY POPS) certified officer, deputy, or federal agent with a strong passion for fostering a safe, supportive, and positive school atmosphere. As an SRO, you will serve as a deputy with the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, working closely with students, educators, and parents to ensure a safe and secure educational environment.
The SRO will play a key role in building relationships with students, particularly teens, and provide mentorship while addressing safety concerns. The ideal candidate will have outstanding interpersonal skills and a commitment to positively impacting the lives of young people.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the primary law enforcement officer on the school campus, ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors.
- Engage in proactive policing, conflict resolution, and crisis management to prevent incidents such as bullying, substance abuse, and other school-related challenges.
- Build strong, positive relationships with students, especially teens, serving as a mentor and role model.
- Educate students on legal matters, including safety protocols, legal rights, personal responsibility, and the law enforcement process.
- Work with school administrators and staff to develop and implement safety plans, emergency protocols, and proactive strategies to maintain a secure campus.
- Respond swiftly to incidents, emergencies, and threats, including accidents, fights, and criminal activities on school property.
- Conduct investigations into criminal offenses occurring on campus and follow appropriate legal procedures.
- Assist with school programs, such as career days and safety awareness seminars, aimed at educating students about law enforcement and personal safety.
- Collaborate with local law enforcement agencies, school personnel, and community organizations to address issues impacting student welfare.
- Participate in school meetings, security assessments, and activities designed to promote a safe, positive school environment.
Qualifications:
- Retired KY POPS certified officer or deputy preferred.
- Must have departed or retired from previous agency in good standing.
- Proven ability to interact effectively with teens and young adults, demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism, empathy, and discretion.
- Must meet the physical and mental requirements necessary to perform law enforcement duties.
- No disabilities that would hinder the ability to perform the duties of a law enforcement officer.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with students, staff, parents, and the community.
- Ability to make sound decisions in high-pressure situations and crisis environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with youth or in educational settings.
- Knowledge of adolescent development and strategies to build rapport with teens.
- Training or experience in conflict resolution, crisis intervention, or other relevant areas.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with school staff and community partners.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be capable of performing law enforcement duties, including patrolling school grounds, handling physical altercations, and responding to emergencies.
- Ability to stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods.
- Ability to safely carry and utilize law enforcement equipment as necessary.
